Let's speculate

Many people seem to think Salem HAS to win in the next volume for her and her side to maintain credibility and threat. Or at the very least RWBY's side has to suffer loses (lose both relics, many people die, Ruby loses and eye and/or gets captured by Salem/Cinder, yadda yadda yadda).
How do we think we can break even with the Good Guys getting a win but keeping Salem and her forces as a legitimate threat?

Hmm, hard to say, the thing is RT don't always go for the standard and expected routes, I'm still not convinced Salem is the final boss for example.

But in the broad strokes:
Salem making off with the Relics would work as they are what she cares about, everything else is just gravy.
The people of Mantle & Atlas being driven from the continent as refugees, the kingdom has full on fallen.

For me, the idea I'll hold until the official episodes come out is that Atlas will fall, but the people of the kingdom will live. The end of the floating city will basically be a humbling experience for the nation and end up causing the Elites and the Blue Collars/Poor to unite and stand together. After all, unifying humanity, slowly chipping away at what divides us, and giving Ruby an example to work with later down the line when we inevitably have to answer the GodBros.

Sounds pretty plausible as well, though I worry that has a "Both sides are in the wrong" vibe and I still find the premise of having to gain the approval of genocidal brats just cos they are powerful iffy.

I'll take a 'Atlas is left helpless and Mantle proceeds to step up and save them, because they're not assholes' approach, helping people unite while also stripping Ironwood of his power.

And Harriet runs into traffic.

Men aren’t even treated badly in RWBY. The male supporting characters (while flawed, just like the main protags) are generally shown in a positive and heroic light.

The main villain? A woman. The secondary one? A woman

There is no “misandry” in RWBY. The issue is that men aren’t in the forefront, they’re support, even amongst the villains and it seems that’s upsetting to certain men.

Well, I hope you can soothe your fragile egos with the thousands of other shows/books/movies/comics where men are in the forefront.

This one is ours.
More men need to practice the Tao of Burlew:

given the above, I think Ruby and friends already had a "Darkest Hour" with Beacon, but are also going into a second one with the Atlas arc.
Yang lost an arm, friends, team.
Weiss lost her freedom
Blake lost her confidence
Ruby saw 2 friends die, and then lost her team while out cold and woke up to a broken big sister.
JN_R lost Pyrrha
everyone lost their school

Ruby and JN_R bounced back a bit faster than the others in that they got together and went back to the field with a new goal (get to Haven and get answers). Meanwhile WBY took a season to get through things in their own way.

But now with Atlas you have;
a kingdom ripping itself apart
Ironwood and his forces turning on Ruby and friends
Qrow and Oscar lost in the ensuing mess
the loss of a relic
and Salem herself showing up with a horde of flying grimm including a giant fuck-you whale

as many detractors who can't see any hope say, things are FUCKED.

What do you lot think?

Seems plausible, though I also think the situation will complicate itself for Salem as the main cast are better prepped this time, not nearly so lost, confused or divided and likely operating outside of her sight, while Atlas will be the more overtly distracting obstacle.

"Asgard is not a place. It's the people." - paraphrase of Odin from Thor: Ragnorok.
I can see this being attributed to Atlas/Mantel by the end of V8/V9
Yeah I can definitely see that, it lets Salem get a win, but avoids like... a Genocide.

"Are you a soldier protecting a King or a Territory? Or a Guardian protecting a people?" instead of "Are you the God of Hammers?"

This kind of thought I think is where James and his supporters are failing to "get it". >.>
Honestly Ironwood very much doesn't seem to get that his job and that of Hunters and soldiers is to risk their lives to protect civilians, hence why he resorts to scarpering the moment things seem too much for him.

Also some Cinder content from her fans.

I love the way he takes the time to throw crap at fanfic writers and what have you as well.
While further demonstrating that he has no fucking clue what the hell he's talking about. Fanfic writers in general and quite often for RWBY specifically quite often come in with an attitude of "Thing sucks, I hate Thing, I'm going to make a better version of Thing to prove that I can/that the author of Thing sucked!" and while it's not exactly something I particularly condone (or condemn) it is a thing that happens quite frequently and is like the exact opposite of Bombers bullshit faux intellectual criticism of fanfic writers.

Also prior to overzealous copyright laws "Fan"fiction was one of the primary methods that new literature was made. Everyone draws inspiration from something, prior to copyright people were just more honest about it. Disney became the most powerful media franchise in the entire world by essentially writing fanfiction of public domain works (and then slammed the door shut behind themselves so no one could follow their path to success).

Basically all of the most famous elements of Arthurian Legend as we know it is because of Medieval fanfiction writers that added their own contributions hundreds of years after the original tales had long faded into myth.

Our entire conception of hell as a physical place with layers from a Italian Renaissance dude writing literal Self Insert fanfiction.

And for a lot of people fanfiction is quite simply a decent way to practice their writing skills before taking a crack at making their own original works. Nothing more. Nothing less. Many of them succeed quite handsomely at it too. I've seen many fanfiction writers produce works that are far better than most published works and who could have made a lot of money selling their fanfiction if not for overly restrictive copyright laws.

Of course I've also seen plenty of fanfiction authors with overly inflated egoes producing lazily hashed together tripe who believe themselves to be brilliant and far superior to the artists whose work they imitate/make fun of. So basically like Bomberguy.

Great insights Mook!

Honestly its rather strange for such an avid gamer to hold other fandoms so much like his own in such raw contempt, but then as others noted his world view seems to be "I am objectively right about anything I feel" so it scans that if he doesn't enjoy it he sees it as stupid and beneath him.

Anyway onto more engaging analyse than an egotistical liar, here is a neat breakdown on just how big the difference between the Ace-Ops training VS RWBY's is.
And Ruby being done with Harriet XD

Ironwood and Raven are acting very similar in regards to Salem.
Discuss.
Both are terrified and because of they can't see victory in anything but black and white total successes, they don't see a way to win and so opt to run away instead.

ooooh boi will it be interesting to see Ironwood's reaction when he learns that not only is OSCAR still alive, but OZPIN is back in the game.

I maintain that Oz is going to 'explain' to Ironwood why one does not shoot a 14 year old boy for disagreeing with you.

Ironwood: You weren't there when I needed you mooooost!
Ozpin: Well Oscar was doing a better job thank I would have and you wouldn't have listened to me anyway.

That'd be fun but I am unsure it'd be suitably dramatic, that conflict feels less like its exclusively his than it does Oscar's, ya know?
