RWBY & RT General Discussion Thread (V1)

And he can make nice videos (I'm quite fond of the car one. The body language is great, and the sort of thing RWBY does a lot better than some animation efforts out there.)

But producing a series like RWBY is a major investment, one I suspect is beyond his studios capabilities without major upsizing (which would require serious investment in top of the money Warner would squeeze out of them) or the kind of crunch people were always calling out RT for (Which they'd then blame company culture for, promise to do better, and then change nothing, and I'd prefer not to get yet another round of that).

On top of that, bad blood between some of his studio and members of CRWBY mean that it seems unlikely a lot of the people that have worked on the show before now would be offered roles, and even if Dillion ended up going in a different direction, I'd say there needs to be at least some continuity behind the scenes.

Also, honestly, Warner is unlikely to sell it to any small group. They're a shining example of the 'ALL THE MONEY! MORE!MORE!' mentality that has devestated so many industries.

So one thing I see popping up recently with the idea that Kerry might find buyers/sponsors for future RWBY volumes is the idea that at the very least Volume 10 might be a thing and that can be used to wrap up the series.

Am I the only one pretty deeply opposed to that idea? Like, I can't say I'm 100% certain, but I feel pretty sure that I'd rather not have any future volumes than to have the CRWBY or someone else try to tie up every loose end in just a single volume. Even if the original crew is involved that feels like a good way to get another gen:LOCK season 2 fiasco.

Granted it's a different thing if we're talking about "volume" as some kind of behemoth mega season that's five times longer than volume 8 (which is currently the longest volume), but if we're talking about a typical or even slightly longer than V8 length volume then I just don't feel like there's any kind of way they can finish the series in a good way with so little screentime.

Even assuming Beyond Volume 9 still gets made and is used as a way to tie up all the loose ends from volume 8 and we can just dive right into the Vacuo plot there's still the fact that we still have 2 more Relics to deal with, each of which should get at least an entire volume dedicated to them in some way (such as how volume 8 is centered around opening the Vault and getting the staff, and is resolved by summoning Ambrosious) instead of having to share a volume, Vacuo itself needs to be explored and the return to Vale (Kingdom) and Beacon should be a proper big thing on it's own.

The Gods are still looming as a overaching presence that probably needs to be confronted in some way, Cinder needs to be dealt with in some way or have character development as does Salem, there's still the possibility of Grimm Summer being a thing and that really shouldn't be glossed over in a speedrun, there's potentially more Salem agents than just the ones we've seen so far judging by the empty chairs during the Evil League of Evil conference in Volume 4, Oscar needs to resolve his identity crisis, Nora needs to find herself and then tie the knot with Ren, Emerald and Mercury don't seem anywhere near done with their character arcs either, Theodore presumably has his own character arc, the Amity Arena CCT is probably going to be important in some way, the refugee problem from Atlas needs to be resolved, etc.

If we take the average length of V6-9 volumes then I just don't see how RWBY could get a satisfactory conclusion without at least three more volumes.

Fully agreed.
Hm. I also feel like the heroes traveling to the land of darkness to confront Salem directly wouldn't be out of order. I would like some in show acknowledgement of the fifth continent.

Also considering how big a deal it is for the world history a trip to Vytal to reaffirm bonds between nations seems to be in order. Though I guess Vacuo is maybe serving as the hub for that already.

I have my fingers crossed (🤞🍀) on RWBY getting continued (and being good) in the future, but I don't dare have my hopes up.

While I wait I can at least console myself with the fact that Kontext is updating again. Since RWBY draws a lot of inspiration from Final Fantasy VIII and Kontext is (very high quality) Final Fantasy VIII fanfiction it scratches some of the same itch.

Very different stories of course, Kontext is more like if Mark Zhang made a a Salem prequel, but it still has a lot of good stuff that I associate with RWBY like the mix of high technology and magic, SeeD/Huntsmen, Maidens/Sorceresses, etc. Also the recent intermissions reminds me of RWBY's WoR episodes in a good way, especially the more polished ones from Volume 4.

"Dillon Goo is OUR GUY! He will save RWBY!"
"But he doesn't have the money for it, and he's just an animator and not a writer."
"But the battle animation will look great again! He's OUR GUY!"
- basically a short back and forth I just had today in a comment section of a youtube video
Well, yeah, it's Youtube. You might as well look for rational thought on twitter.

The battle animations already look great, these people are fucking numpties.
I mean the battle animation has been of varying quality. A lot of Dillon's stuff does look better.

However battle animation is far less important than writing quality and its doubtful that Dillon could sustain the kind of quality animation he usually makes if he had to produce a show as big as RWBY while working within the expected deadlines that this sort of show would have for production.

It's not like the show reminds us in the openings that it was created by an animator or anything.

That is because they are honoring the friend who came up with the initial idea. The same guy who knew his limits and went to two friends who could write the story.
Those friends he went to were Miles and Kerry. Not Dillon or Shane.
You need more than animation skills to produce a show like RWBY, even in the beginning.

Originally I was planning on waiting for the RWBY Archive Promenade to get an english translation before buying it. With everything that's going on I'm wondering if maybe I should just get a first edition while they're still on sale, just in case there's never an english translation. There are tools to automatically translate text in images these days after all and the biggest draw of the book for me is the artwork.

I've gotten art books with that logic before.
