Personal theory is that Remnant has a Final Fantasy 7 style lifestream. Except it either instead or also has a Grimmstream. And now Salem is bringing one of the veins of that Grimmstream to the surface.
It so perfectly explains how Grimm manage to get fucking everyone, even on secluded islands where they should be easy to cull. Bubbles of evil reach up to the surface and form Grimm that walk, swim and fly the surface of Remnant.
I could totally see that, good comparison there and yeah that would explain a ton about how Grimm pop up and maintain a steady population in places where they should be easy to wipe out. Yikes, what a scary thought.

I think it was a different Final Fantasy taht specifically got cited as his main inspiration, but I'm under the impression he liked the whole franchise.
