some people are trying to claim Huntsmen are Mercenaries and that having an Army like Atlas did would of been better. -.-
People have been claiming that for ages, its so dumb and the series demonstrates why very clearly.
Huntsmen kinda are Mercenaries just like heroic Adventurer Guilds in fantasy settings are mercenaries.
Which is to say that psychologically speaking they're coming at their jobs from a very different angle than IRL mercenaries.
Current and historical mercenaries in the real world are people who enter a occupation where they are expected to fight and likely kill other humans in exchange for money. Historically the money typically did not even come from their employers directly but instead from being allowed to steal/loot the valuables of the people they were fighting.
Also historically speaking gathering big armies together practically guaranteed stealing food and other supplies from local farmers and such regardless of which side they were on since armies are expensive and difficult to feed and eat through supplies at a scarily fast rate.
Naturally this (and other factors like being unreliable) has led to mercenaries getting a well deserved bad rep. Since signing up for a job where the recruitment pitch is "
murder and probably also steal from other people in return for money" isn't something you'd except a morally upstanding individual to do.
Meanwhile fantasy style "
mercenaries" typically have a much higher expectation of fighting some form of "monster" instead of actual people. The expectation is not "
hurt people for money" but instead "
protect people for money" which significantly changes the moral calculus taken when signing up for the job.
Physically the job may be similar to that of mercenary work but psychologically the connotation is closer to being a firefighter or coast guard. It's dangerous work but for the most part you're going in with the intention of saving lives, while a mercenary intends to take lives.
Anyway the whole "
everyone should have an Atlas army" thing is stupid because Atlas is not the only nation with an army. It's the only nation that grossly overspends on it's military budget but Vacuo didn't get a fleet of airships with giant cannons from private donations and I seriously doubt Mistral developed actual freaking tanks with police forces as the primary intended user base.
I do wish people would stop taking the Kingdoms WoR so ridiculously out of context. It's far more sensible to interpret Salem's words as
"most nations have volunteer armies and don't use conscription unless it's absolutely necessary while Atlas has universal conscription"
instead of
"most nations literally don't have a military until an actual emergency occurs and then have to build the entire military from the ground up during an emergency, Atlas is the only nation that actually has a standing army"
which is just ludicrous.
