Does this technically count as fanfic or as extended universe since we're still writing the book this ties into?

Aw sure, why the hell not? Can't promise I'll be as on top of checking yet another forum as SB and such, but here we go:

CIRTA GOSEGHAD, Chief Nanny and a bodyguard for the royal family.
PROS: Cat Person, Fanatically loyal, End User.
CONS: Ara Ara, Easily Bribed by Family Members, Illiterate in English.

YRLIA GOSEGHAD, Maid and Bodyguard for the Royal Family, raised with your siblings.
PROS: Cat Person, End User, Literate and Conversational in English.
CONS: Earthaboo, Literally Sixteen, Smug Cat

SHETI JOHNSON, Semi-retired mercenary, hunter and housewife.
PROS: Cat Person, Conversational in English, Experienced Fighter.
CONS: Married to An American, Mercenary, Will Bring Her Child To Work.

Two bodyguards and a housewife. This will be hilarious. Especially with the Ara Ara.

Because this is Smugcat.moe, and I already had a setting where I had cat people, this is essentially going to be Beads and Brass running on the SACQ format. This is happening because I'm bored and I'll attempt to provide background information as necessary for both projects so that you don't have to read all of the Beads and Brass anthology.

You forgot to mention my presence, which much like a bad case of the catnip fever, will not go away and offer "helpful" advice to people who need setting help. For example, one piece of helpful advice is that the Yrcen, or cat people, are much more physically durrable, so such "features" as full auto fire in 7.62x54R is not nearly as much of a downside to them.

So we're going for a BAR chambered in .50 BMG, right? :V

Your budget is, IIRC, somewhere around twenty four pounds of gold, $500 USD from rent, and whatever Wyta's husband has in a locked box in Alaska that he refuses to talk about. It might even be guns.

It's more a few kilograms of gold, a bit more than $500 from rent, and yeah, whatever else you can scrounge up from myriad sources.

And of course, there's always taking (mostly free) military aid from the US, but like do you want to be completely dependent on one country for armaments? It's not like you wouldn't have to deal with FMS and ITAR, right?

Oh thank fuck finally a Small Arms quest that I can actually take part in because it's set in the present day, as opposed to the interwar era which i know nothing about.

On the one hand while the catpeople are indeed better able to handle things like full auto 7.62mm NATO rifles, I think for starters we should try and at least get our feet wet with the stuff our American allies can contribute. So M4A1s that fell off the back of a truck. I mean, the USMC's moving over to that nice shiny new M27, surely they can give us some unused M4A1s...

Honestly, I'm trying to determine what level of bullshit they're actually capable of, but the threat dossier will be in the next update anyway.

Also, at the moment, you're in the five minute where window the USMC was replacing the M16A4 with the M4 and M4A1 because they still had to lie to congress about the M27.

I feel we should get a proper vote format going, because it's useful when you've got a lot of voting going on, but I'll go with the existing options for now.

That said, if we want COTS, I'm pretty sure there are a few commercial operations selling rifles chambered in very large rounds, though I don't know of any myself. Their offerings may be a bit too expensive, but I don't really know for sure.

We're working on formatting, including getting a vote counter that isn't me trying to scry the thread with my phone. That said, for reference this is gonna be the sort of buy that's about even with a moderate US county refitting their police force, so COTS is really just shorthand for "existing guns that are being manufactured in 2014"

I have pen and paper, that will be what I'm running with for now.

Also, yeah, your buys are like on par with a local police department, they're not really big enough to justify custom work.

I'm now reminded of Garand Thumb's recent batch of AR reviews, which all basically boil down to "for this price point, or slightly cheaper, you couldbad

Vote tally for here.
CIRTA GOSEGHAD 1
YRLIA GOSEGHAD 4
SHETI JOHNSON 3
TIMOTHY WALKER 3

ARTASH SEVEN FINGERS 1

Think I might just use a polling thing for both sites at this point.

[X] 7.62 NATO
Yrcen can take the recoil just fine firing this full-auto, the few humans that are getting it can deal with it. Fighting the monsters and Yrcen that are likely targets, I want something with more KE than 5.56.

I'll have to agree with the position that 5.56 just doesn't seem like it's enough to expediently do someone in (and isn't that a sentence) - while 7.62 soviet is an option, it's not the best option, and needs to be bought properly rather than just taken from the Americans, which is IMO preferable at this time - eventually homebrew ammo and guns is preferable, but since all these options come from the america-controlled portal, there's no practical difference other than that one doesn't need to be purchased proper.

Eh, 5.56 works at killing people, the problem is it just takes a lot of bullet. If you're worried about dangerous game, that's what full auto is for; likewise heavily armored and bullet resistant issues can generally solved by "dump more bullets"

The real argument of this update is "do we want to issue a good day to day gun, or do we want to issue something that will work on everything we can reasonably expect to fight with a rifle?"
