Thoughts on Contrapoints?

I like Natalie's work and I'm a sucker for really theatrical presentation in general.

I get that she's uh, controversial for some, but at the same when I've recommended videos she's done to people, they've found them informative and helpful. Admittedly, that was her "Are Traps Gay" video that I linked a coworker to after she asked me if her shitbird of an ex-husband's pornography habits were normal, because it was the only really accessible video I could think of that talked about gender performance and sexual attraction (which is something I knew I could not explain at all.)

So, I like Contrapoints overall.

However, I do understand that her positions alienate non-binary and non-passing trans folks, and that this causes (completely understandable) distress to a number of people- Which, in turn, upsets a number of Natalie's fans.

As such, knowing this is a touchy subject for some people, I'd like to point out that we're keeping an eye on this chat, and request that people try to keep things friendly.

Also, since it was pointed out that this has happened a few times in related chats- If anyone deadnames Natalie, we're gonna ban them. I'm not joking. I haven't figured out how to make mod-boxes yet, but this is dead serious.

I like Contrapoints. There's something very compelling about that kind of theatricality that leans into the subject matter. It's something I think that leftist youtube needs more of!

Being trans in Natalie's community is really uncomfortable even disregarding some of her more... contentious takes.

A lot of the fan communities around her are filled with Fash and Chuds who find her memes appealing, this group of people tend to be rather fetishistic of trans people.

I find then entertaining and informative, but I can understand that she has some Questionable Takes from certain perspectives.

I don't super love some of the stuff she says, but she's a useful gateway, I suppose. I just wish she wasn't treated as the be all and end all of trans discourse, because I disagree with some of her more prominent rhetoric.

What do you disagree with?

Specifically, some of her videos can be taken to say that the chief determination of gender is what other people perceive you as, rather than what you feel you are. This is considered rather offensive by trans people who are not "passing," i.e. appearing as their self-experienced gender in the eyes of others.

Essentially, it feels like she's saying "If you feel like you're a woman but look like a man to other people, you're still a man."

And I can entirely understand why some people would take issue with that.
