I like to hear news out of Rojava. I figure it would be best to create a thread on that subject to entice people to post news about it.

Couldn't a concern with municipal economy be what happens if some municipalities are wealthier, in resources, skills or infrastructure? Or if some of them are a lot more attractive in terms of opportunities and get flooded by people while other empty out?

I doubt Rojava has already faced those issues since it's probably too busy trying to survive, but if someone knows the theory better, how does it account for that?

Pretty sure Rojava has faced this issue. As of 2016 Rojava had grown to a population of 3.5-4M from 2.5M at the start of the Civil War. I'm not aware of what their solution has been, though, or if they're still trying to figure it out.

Well, hopefully it doesn't take civil war...

Sadly, I'm pretty sure it will. Western states have way too much influence over society for anything similar to happen unless they start crumbling.

I'm so happy that Rojava exists, like I'd never thought I'd see something like this in my life:

The DOD actually had to issue a directive telling them to not do this it was becoming so prevalent.

?

For someone not familiar with the military, what precisely is the 'this' that you're talking about?

At least one of those US soldiers is wearing a YPJ patch. On that patch is a red star. US troops are wearing Socialist symbols on their uniform, sufficiently often enough that the DOD is telling them they can't. This means US troops are voluntarily signalling their solidarity with comrades. Part of the benefit of US troops in Rojava is it dispels a lot of the worst myths about Socialists, they get to see what Republicans (and Democrats) demonize as evil; our troops get to see Socialism close up and are helping the YPG form more effective revolutionary militias. These troops with experience in training revolutionary militias with sympathies to revolutionary Socialism are going to be coming home at some point.

I wonder how much exposure the US troops working with the YPG/J have had to the actual philosophy and praxis of democratic confederalism?

Interesting. We tend to forget most people do not know about Rojava when our news and debate spheres are all left leaning and informed on the subject. But it goes under reported and most people aren't aware there's an island of hope in Syria.

I do worry about Rojava being crushed between Assad and Turkey, honestly.

Last I heard, they had a deal with Assad because an autonomous region having part of the country is better than Turkey doing so. But yes, that's a pretty big concern.

Yeah.

Unfortunately, seems like Rojava is basically done for: Assad won't allow it to exist, neither will Turkey, and Trump has gone and fucked it.
