RWBY & RT General Discussion Thread (V1)

Synposis: "The future-fantasy world of Remnant is filled with ravenous monsters, treacherous terrain, and more villains than you can shake a sniper-scythe at. Fortunately, Beacon Academy is training Huntsmen and Huntresses to battle the evils of the world, and Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang are ready for their first day of class."

RWBY is an animated series created by the late Monty Oum and the 'CRWBY' at Rooster Teeth (of Red vs. Blue fame). The story begins with a group of four girls in their first year at an academy where they will finalize their training to battle the creatures of Grimm, but all is not as it seems and their are shadowy plots afoot.

We're here to discuss news, analyse characters, chat about episodes and generally engage with the series and maybe some other RT products to, I've got a strong interest in Recorded by Arizal for instance ;)

So strap on in and let's have some fun!

Do you like amazing #3D? Do you love action? Drama? Incredibly environmental storytelling with ensemble casts and a rich world? Well then I have good news for you, as TRANSFORMERS WAR FOR CYBERTRON: SIEGE, from @RoosterTeeth, Polygon Pictures netflix & more has got you covered!

There's so much to love with this film so please forgive the rambling but to kick off with it, the modeling & animation. The creators manage to translate the original series designs with incredible faithfulness while also making them expression, detailed and thoroughly updated.

The characters move with a great sense of weight & despite them being on a world designed for them, you still get a sense for their size, their weight & metal nature. What's more the set design work is incredible, amazingly detailed, captured the mood perfectly & epic in scale

The various characters are all incredibly well utilized & play worthwhile & necessary roles in the story, no one feels tacked on or superfluous, everyone's got personality, presence and purpose which is not easy feat with such a large cast!

Speaking of the characters, this series has the custom @RoosterTeeth skill in environmental storytelling, show don't tell that draws you in, creates a lived in world while letting you really draw your own conclusions about things which made for an all the more enthralling viewing

Some examples include the blend of everyone's designs, these characters are beat to heck, you can see the weight of the war on their world & on them & in their actions, manner & tones, doing that with people is tough, let alone robots.

You can see the zealous fury & use of lies & misdirection's that Megatron uses to maintain his rule and his increasingly unhinged nature. You can feel the raw desperation in Optimus, see how his sense of duty drives him on even as it almost seems to be killing him.

Jetfire’s sense of personal loyalty to Megatron & that of his loyalty to his convictions plays out in every scene he is in without feeling intrusive. Elita is trapped being the pragmatist trying to keep the ship running while chaos surrounds her. Ratchet & Impactor are just great.

Starscream of all people gains some intriguing depth when I realized Megatron describing him as a weapon in private, along with other Decepticons being shocked at his promotion, hints at an implied caste system among the Decepticons which was very neat & clever.

The fact we don't see Cybertron cloudless or in shining daylight until the end makes the reveal all the more gorgeous & hopeful without overshadowing the tragedy of the war as well & just looked grand.

My only real critique is I wish it had, had maybe one more episode to let things play out just a bit longer, but if "I want more" is the worst I can say about something, then that should be taken as a ringing endorsement, I heartily recommend this six part series!

Why I don't think Volume 7's soundtrack is the strongest this series has produced. I do think it has a few gems in for certain. Acoustic I May Fall took one of my favorite RWBY songs and made it 20 times better.

That's a fair take, to be honest I can never really pick between the various albums, certain songs always leap to the forefront for me but after that its all a haze of "stuff I like" XD

As usual, the lyrics for the music continue to be FASCINATING.
Agreed, gosh Villain is such a good villain song!

Touch the Sky is also particularly intriguing:

And a conversation on Discord again reminds me of why I instinctively love Terra Cotta-Arc so much. Her frustration at being stuck with nonsense overtime because other people be stupid resonates so much with me this year. I also remain convinced she volunteered herself for the airship theft because TRASHING THAT DAMN RADAR STATION HAS BEEN HER DREAM FOR MONTHS!

Haha, Oh my gosh, that is a great head-canon, I'm all for it XD

Terra: I know this is a crime, & it may cause the military trouble... But on the other hand... They have it coming! (Plus paid vacation time!)

And she's an Arc by marriage. Crime is the long standing family tradition!

This is amazing XD

Now now, let's be fair. Elm MIGHT not completely agree with things. Maybe. No idea with Vine, and Clover's opinion doesn't matter any more.

And Winter is about to become an emotional disaster.
So true.

Elm: If I just focus on my hurt feelings, I don't have to think about what I am doing.
Vine: I don't give a ****. (Based on Unicorn of Wars video)

Winter (Internal screaming)

And that's BEFORE Ironwood discovers Weiss and Penny are out there actively fighting him.
Indeed and imagine how he;ll react if he finds out Winter "let" them go.

Also on other sites I mentioned some RWBY meta arguing the White Fang plot-line was not analogous to the American Civil Rights movement and I was recently redirected to them, and my gosh it is incredible how well these insights hold up.

Thought I'd stop by and share this, CRWBY's upcoming rpg adventure set in Remnant:

I am very much looking forward to this. My interest in making and playing tabletop RPG game has waned somewhat lately due to a lack of anyone to play with and it being a real struggle for me to GM myself. But this might reignite my love of the genre, and give me inspiration to try my hand at it again.

I wasn't super exited to hear about RT making Transformers stuff instead of their own shows but the trailer for this looks kickass (I think I can spot some gen:LOCK influence and experience in how the robots move) and it does have that MCU type advantage of being a completely new and somewhat separate entry into a super bloated franchise that makes it easier for newcomers to get invested without having to wrestle with decades of tangled continuity. Will check this out later.

So true, you don't date, befriend or associate with an Arc unless you're down to commit various shades of criminality.
I'm reminded of that Dr McNinja quote about Gordito the 12 year old going around gleefully punching all the elite mini-boss villains in the face.

"The child delights in violence."

Replace violence with crime and that's basically the Arc family in a nutshell. Even Adrian Arc, a literal baby was 100% onboard with aiding and abetting a group of criminals while they stole military property. That family is straight up gangsta.

Also the Sapphron x Terra pairing is basically that "Be gay, do crime" meme in a nutshell. :D

I feel like they make a very good point but also miss some stuff. The thing about the Faunus is that much like animal based analogies for racism in general the Faunus don't really fit neatly into any one specific 1:1 analogy for a specific minority.

The White Fang itself and the post-war era situation for the Faunus is a great fit for the IRA and racism against the Irish.

But the shops that outright forbid Faunus customers and even have signs saying so are more of a fit for America with it's segregation. Most notably against black people but it can also be spun as being about Irish, as America did segregate the Irish in the past.

The widespread use of Faunus as slave labor? Trying to "solve" the Faunus issue by shipping all the Faunus off to their own little tropical Island that most of them have no connection to and which likely can't hold all of them? Is much more of an analogy of the African slave trade and the Madagascar plan.

And the Faunus being their own separate cultural group that basically everyone has shat on for thousands of years and which only really started getting any kind of dignity back and finally got their own country after the biggest world war in history? Could be seen as an analogy for Jews.

Much like the countries and cultures of Remnant itself is somewhat random seeming hodgepodge of various historical groups (Mistral which is both China+Japan but also Greece+Rome) the Faunus don't really fit neatly into any one category and takes bits and pieces of various real life cultures and history. Atlas might physically and historically work as a British Empire analogy but it's culture and attitude seems much more modern USA inspired.

I'm sorry to hear that and hope that proves to be the case, I've always had an interest but never the time or the crew myself XD

I'd heartily recommend it and I definitely get where you're coming from in terms of that concern, I choose to view it as a positive sign for the companies rep and stability, at least for the time being and yeah as someone not super familiar with Transformers I had a good handle on what was happening.

Pffft that is an amazing image, I'd forgotten all about that web comic, gosh how times change (OO)

He's ;earning so fast, such a natural his mom must be proud XD

Hahahaha, well said.
Blake & Yang just taking notes on the side XD

I am glad you liked it and also kudos on your insights there, that was extremely well put together!

I definitely think the White Fang as an analogue for the IRA works well given the shift from peace, to fighting to murder over time, but you raise excellent points about the segregation policies.

And excellent overarching point on the collection of world cultures, histories, themes and experiences, kudos there, though Menagerie at least doesn't seem to have involved displacing anyone else at least. And yeah I think the writers have said that Atlas is meant to be an analogue for the US, which is a cool and frankly more relevant representation of militarism than always leaning on Nazi iconography like most shows do. Not to say doing that is wrong, but it certainly makes RWBY feel more grounded in looking at our current world and the problems facing it and drawing from those.

Some interesting examination of RWBY's animation and production:

Ooh I love their work, these are super educational! Also I did not know one could do that on tumblr, very cool, I'll have to go through and skim some for my own use as well, though the one's you provided look like excellent primers, thanks!

Oh Coco. You need to get a girlfriend or get out of Vacuo. Cuz that thirst is real. :ROFLMAO:

Well I finished binge watching this yesterday. Would like to echo most of your comments. Though I'd also like to add that just like the last cg animated Transformers show I watched the series is a bit hard to follow with it's decades of continuity and expanding cast leading to a very information dense story that kind of just assumes that everyone is familiar with a lot of these characters already.

Something more interesting I noticed was that once again Rooster Teeth found themselves embroiled in making a cg animated show that has a racism subplot with some very uncomfortable implications... Except this time nobody gives a shit because from what I can tell this has long been part of Transformers canon so everyone gives it a free pass in a way they don't with RWBY.

I mean I'm not super familiar with Transformers but from what I can remember from prior to watching this show Megatron has been a fallen rebel for a long time in Transformers canon. With this show however I became a lot more familiar with just what that meant.

Which was apparently that Megatron and the Decepticons were a literal slave race who Optimus Prime and some Big Good called Alpha Trion helped rescue from their oppressors by starting a rebellion, only for Megatron to betray his mentor and savior Alpha Trion to make himself dictator for life and then eventually deciding to commit genocide on all the white people Autobots who refused to join him.

I mean, maybe there's some context I'm missing out on but from what I've seen here Transformers Canon is way more
9762315d73744d55cd1bba104544efeff5fbfdb4.jpg

than anything Rooster Teeth has come up with on it's own. Yet I've never seen the same kind of outrage materialize over the much more widely known and mainstream Transformers than I have over RWBY.
