Something I need to get off my chest for a long time, and it’s Fixing RWBY, specifically its depiction of Roman Torchwick:
FRWBY!Roman lacks any real coherence as a character. He's dark but not evil, selfish yet inexplicably loyal, abrasive yet willing to help the heroes — contradictions that make him irritating rather than complex. This lack of consistency only allows Celtic Phoenix to use him as a hollow mouthpiece, a puppet to say or do whatever serves the moment. There's no real arc, no meaningful growth — just a shapeless figure stumbling through the plot with no real direction.
On top of that, the story refuses to seriously address Torchwick's flaws. His past crimes are glossed over after he joins the heroes, and the one moment he's called out by Blake for his indirect part in Tukson's death has no lasting impact. There's a scene in Volume 5 where the cast goes to a bathhouse (no joke), Roman is surprised to find out that Lie Ren is in fact a guy, much to Ren's bafflement. They spend the next scene arguing about it, with Ren listing off all the clues that he is a guy and Roman defending his assumption with examples of women with those same traits, unwittingly taking a potshot at Weiss' appearance. And Neo, she disguised herself as Jaune just to get close to Roman. Yes, they're criminals, doesn't make that scene less creepy. The scene where Weiss and Yang have a heart-to-heart in canon? It's here in Fixing RWBY, except it happens in a place literally called "Onsen, Onsen, Onsen".
This whole thing stems from the stupid belief that Oscar's role — Ozpin's vessel — could be filled by anyone. Instead of respecting the narrative weight that position carries, Celtic jammed his favorite character into the slot, reshaping him into a glorified OC wearing Roman's face.
The fallout became more obvious when Cinder recruited Melanie Malachite as a shameless stand-in for Neo, because the real dynamic with Neo was broken by the changes to Roman. The tacked-on Brunswick Farms backstory tries to force sympathy for Torchwick, it only succeeded in making me hate Roman even more. No amount of tragic flashbacks or sob-story can excuse the fact that Roman never accepts responsibility for his actions, never meaningfully grows, and never earns the redemption the story shoves into his lap. His random flashes of selflessness are hollow, disconnected, and insulting to anyone actually paying attention.
FRWBY!Roman isn't a character anymore. He's a pandering power fantasy dressed up in the rotting skin of someone who used to matter. He drags the story down at every turn, erodes the core themes, and spits in the face of the narrative's emotional integrity. He's not a fix. He's the worst kind of fanfiction cliché — a bloated, indulgent Gary Stu.
Bonus: FRWBY!Arslan Atlan is supposed to be portrayed as a determined combatant, striving to emerge from the shadow of Pyrrha Nikos. However, Arslan’s character ironically makes her far less sympathetic; her bitterness toward Team JNPR—particularly her disdain for Ren, Nora, and Pyrrha’s “non-Mistralian” heritage—makes her come across as elitist and bigoted rather than relatable. Her emotional breakdown after losing to JNPR feels less like a tragic fall and more like karmic justice. By the time Cinder kills her in Volume 6, the audience most likely felt detached or grimly satisfied rather than mournful.
