A rather irksome trend amongst the RWDE crowds I've had inflicted on my by braying stalkers is that "Ironwood isn't a fascist! You're devaluing the word!" so I looked into it and here's my results. I'll bold the parts Ironwood has while stuff that is bolded & italiszied is for traits he had but that were obscured by his desire to be a hero/good person but that ultamitely won out over whatever decency/standards he had:
Fascism
is a far-right, authoritarian, ultranationalist political ideology and movement, characterized by a dictatorial leader, centralized autocracy, militarism, forcible suppression of opposition, belief in a natural social hierarchy, subordination of individual interests for the perceived good of the nation and race, and strong regimentation of society and the economy.
Authoritarian
is a political system characterized by the rejection of political plurality, the use of strong central power to preserve the political status quo, and reductions in the separation of powers, and democratic voting & rule of law. Political scientists have created many typologies describing variations of authoritarian forms of government. Authoritarian regimes may be either autocratic or oligarchic and may be based upon the rule of a party or the military. States that have a blurred boundary between democracy and authoritarianism have some times been characterized as "hybrid democracies", "hybrid regimes" or "competitive authoritarian" states.
And just for kicks, Utilitarian
Is a family of normative ethical theories that prescribe actions that maximize happiness and well-being for all affected individuals. I think this is what Ironwood believes himself to be, hence constantly screwing over Mantle "For the world" but even if you agree with this ideology, Ironwood's preferential treatment for Atlas means that its little more than a justification rather than a true belief system.
Anyone who has genuinely studied politics can tell you that you are many others on this topic are wrong, because you either misunderstand the terms of apply them incorrectly. Not to mention that these political terms are more complex than what a google search can give you, the Soviet Union for example would bold more of the qualities of fascism, yet it is not considered to be a fascist regime. The differences between German Fascism and Italian Fascism are also numerous. Yet both are fascism with different qualities.
What is usually not done is separation of Volume 7 and Volume 8 Ironwood. Because these are very different characters. One can easily acknowledge the authoritarianism of Ironwood in V8, because he is an Authoritarian (Not a fascist) then. I have made an analysis of the topic, going over the explicit qualities of fascism and Ironwood pre-8 covers maybe 2-3 of them.
Not to mention that many modern democracies also have these qualities of fascism, that is why having some qualities associated with fascism, does not make a country or a person fascist, these terms overlap from one ideology to the other.
In Volume 7 no democratic plurality is rejected, there is no central power (Unless you claim that the council is that, and it exists in every kingdom). In Volume 7 democratic voting is not reduced and is allowed to be free. There is no autocrat in V7, and the military is not in power. So in Volume 7 neither Atlas nor Ironwood are Fascist or Authoritarian. It is important to note that because people like you often claim that Ironwood has always been Fascist/Authoritarian, but that is in fact not the case.
Volume 8 Ironwood is supported by noone and is seen even by Ironwood fans as an Authoritarian that is very much might become a fascist in the future. But the separation between Volume 8 Ironwood and the rest of his performance needs to be made, because these are fundamentally different people.
The same happens in historical political discussions when for example discussing political figures like Lenin, who to this day are seen in a very good light by many socialists while Stalin is a more controversial and disliked figure. Yet one can discuss how Lenin before the revolution was very much different than the one who was after the Revolution and was more like Stalin in his actions.
To simplify all political discussion just because you dislike a character seems to be a very silly thing to do to me.
